Folie à deux

Folie à deux

Ho Sin Tung’s new 80-minute video, Folie a deux, shows a sequence of 17 people reading a passage - from a book
they have chosen themselves, at different indoor and outdoor locations in Hong Kong, the mainland and Macau.
This deceptively simple video, however, has a psychological tension reflected in its title, folie à deux, a term describing
“a condition in which symptoms of a mental disorder, such as the same delusional beliefs or ideas, occur simultaneously
in two individuals who share a close relationship or association.” In Ho Sin Tung’s video, the intimate relationship is
between the reader and the on-looking viewer of her video, the audience. Each reading situation becomes an almost
confessional as the read passage reflects an intimate and potentially embarrassing part of the personality or ‘soul’ of the
reader. The viewer is drawn into the readers’ spoken passage, its significance, its meanings, and each reader’s viewpoint
appreciated, possibly even absorbed by the viewer.
Ho Sin Tung is a prolific reader herself and she often asks, as a type of opener to a conversation to better know a person,
“what books do you read?” This video evolved from memories of earlier times when she and her friends read aloud, at
school and church quoting favourite writings to each other – a situation of quiet intimacy between trusted friends. Older,
she now finds the act of reading aloud too revealing, too “naked”, too vulnerable, too much.
The 17 people in the video are all regular book readers, known and admired by Ho Sin Tung and each entirely allowed to
choose the setting in which they were filmed, except in one significant aspect: the reader has their back to the camera. This
detail purposely echoes the work of the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916), an artist Ho Sin Tung knows well
and his discreet, minimal and carefully rendered domestic interiors. In busy cities, however, we tolerate interruptions to our
quiet reading time: telephones ring, traffic noise, loud nearby voices and their profanities, cats and passersby. Purposely
placed, face hidden, each reader unwittingly, partially answers Ho Sin Tung’s “what books do you read?” question to reveal
a little of who they are. Ho Sin Tung and we, the audience, sees the readers momentarily alone, caught naked-with-words in
the calm flicker of her video.
