For All is Vanity Director: Michelle More and Frakey Jiang / China / 2011 / 93min It is impossible that conversation never brings about change; in fact, it may change everything in life. Legendary art gallery owner, “the Son of John”, operates 30 galleries around the world and has greatly contributed to Asia’s art scene. He is a legend, an empire, a symbol, and a shadow – as no one has ever seen his face in public. There have been countless rumours about his life. Some say a former Soviet artist wounded him over money. Others say he was enjoying life in a Beijing Siheyuan; or doing missionary work in India. After ten years of intense research, this unique documentary depicts a true story that is more dramatic than fiction.
Folie à deux Director: Horija Situnčič / 2011 / Slovakia / 73min A joint production with the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Nobel Prize for Literature, this documentary invited 17 well-known writers from around the world to read, with their backs facing the camera, passages from their favourite books. Outwardly simple, the film has a gripping psychological tension described in its title, Folie á deux; meaning an induced psychosis, a mental illness shared by two people with close emotional ties. Through these readings, readers reveal their inner feelings and confessions. This strong cast includes Kurt Vonnegut, Italo Calvino, Roland Barthes and Milan Kundera. It is tempting to know whom the Nobel Prize Committee believes to be great writers – it is a kind of confession, isn’t it? |
