In her book "Cafe Europa", Slavenka Drakulić‘ talked about numerous Eastern European shops and restaurants named themselves with "splendorous" names like Vienna Cafe and American Market. Obviously It is a method to attract costumer. But it also reveals how they wish to include themselves in land of the advanced, strong, and wealthy.
A name is an instant heaven. In Hong Kong, among the Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui area, there are a lot of hotels name after foreign countries - Venice is opposite to Madrid, Nanjing is close to Santiago, Paris is upstairs of Hawaii. Big lies exposed naked in the city. You have to be an accomplice to play this game. |
