Energy collection in the pre-industrial period was restrained by geographical locations, climate and limited amount of certain resources. Many centuries before there was a shortage of natural resources, we see the development of an introspective way of energy discovery in the Orient. Masters in the East focused their attention on the energy hidden inside themselves and created qigong, a system of deep breathing exercises, and yoga to unleash such energy.
Energy is born out of a collective. That’s why we are interested in artists and their creative approaches who are able to “do work”. There are many such artists around the world who, instead of consuming energy by using a large number of things in their works, manage to turn their works into generators and export energy to their networks. They have built their own collectives to study the sharing, transformation, adaptation, resonance and magnifying of energy and bring out the inherent energy in any social context. They work in the fields, on the streets and in the neighborhoods, integrating their creative work in the reconstruction of social energy. They are ready to break away from existing boundaries of artistic concepts and mechanisms. Such artworks with a touch of “total art” connect individuals with the collective, others with self, labor with creation, everyday routines with miracles.
We are interested in artists that can motivate the public, revisit or rewrite history, convert and transform energy and organize dialogues and communications. They also form the four components of the themed exhibition in the 2012 Shanghai Biennale.
The idea behind “Reactivation” is not relocating a power plant to a place far away from the city, or generating power with renewable energy. Rather, it is an opportunity for us to think about how we live. When the site of the power plant becomes alive again, it doesn’t generate any power in the traditional sense. Instead, it creates spiritual pulses that would activate the inherent energy within a community.

Painting On and On presents a series of exhibitions proposing various discourses on painting in Hong Kong today. The first instalment of this project will feature works by more than thirty local painters, ranging from early practitioners of the 1970s to a selection of emerging artists. Born out of a desire to stimulate interest, the thematic exhibitions, seminars, workshops and a publication are documentations of the artists’ collaboration, commonalities and mutual influences.
The first exhibition in the programme, “The Repository of Coherent Babbles” includes works by Sushan CHAN, HO Sin Tung, Cassian LAU, Joey LEUNG, Vivian POON, Wilson SHIEH and TSE Yim On. The use of figuration and narrative has had a long tradition in painting. With the movement gaining momentum since the late 1990s in Hong Kong, artists employ the quotidian to question the descriptive and representational limitations of the medium. The painters in this exhibition combine inspirations from Chinese and Western figuration, mythology, fables, surrealism, comics, animation, film and literature into visual narrations of contemporary realities.
Painting On and On is an artist-run project initiated by a group of Hong Kong painters in the Spring of 2011. This exhibition series is supported by Gallery EXIT @SOUTHSITE.

In this exhibition, nine Hong Kong artists show recent work; and, amongst their individual intentions and messages, they reveal a little about themselves. Amidst the frenzy of Hong Kong's supposed recent "art boom", the actual work that artists undertake - the thinking, conceptualization and physical realization of a project - should also be appreciated. In 'Traits, curator John Batten will briefly tease out some personal qualities within each artists' work.

In this exhibition 13 artists, ten from Hong Kong and one each from Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan have been invited to develop and present projects that provoke and challenge existing theories of value in art.
The exhibition combines examinations of the social, psychological, political or historical basis of notions of value with examinations of aspects of the sociology of culture including its institutions and their typical relations and forms of organization and self organization, and ruminations on the mechanics and operation of the economic cycle of production, distribution, consumption and exchange.
Hong Kong inter-vivos Film Festival

Solo exhibition of Ho Sin Tung
Hanart TZ Gallery
13 March - 10 April 2012

Inter vivos,
“Hong Kong Inter-vivos Film Festival 2012” is an imaginary film festival created by artist Ho Sin Tung. The exhibition consists of 28 imaginary films, paintings of fake/imagined film stills, movie posters, and videos of movie-trailers filmed by the artist. With this project Ho Sin Tung pays homage to masters including Juanma Bajo Ulloa, Theodoros Angelopoulos, Graham Greene, Apichatpong Weerasethakul , Krzysztof Kielowski and Jean Luc-Godard.
Each of the 28 films belongs to a category created by Ho. They include „Masterpiss‟, „Classic Restoriette‟, „The Advance Guard‟, „Mocumentary', “Movie I want to make if I had the budget,” etc. Within these categories, Ho mocks the authority of classics to discuss the phenomenon of HKIFF, and sate her own desire to make film.

Although the Latin term "inter vivos" can be directly translated as “between the living” – but only in fictional world are such things possible. The distant metaphors and virtual bodies on screen are the closest one gets to such dreams.
