First Solo Exhibition of Ho Sin Tung

"An exhibition inspired by one of life's common situations: the desire to see some one, but that person is nowhere around. No matter whether they've been taken by death or, though alive, have simply moved on, they remain forever distant. The subjects of my painting include actors who died young, fictional characters who perish in novels, and all those who have been killed by natural disaster or on the battlefield. Perhaps they once carried within them the grief of personal loss, but today they are not only my substitute for those whose names will never be spoken, they themselves have become the subject of mourning." ---Ho Sin Tung, 2010

"I led you in yesterday, you lead me out today."
Issues of reliance, solicitude, subversion, and treachery underscore the complexity of a productive and meaningful relationship between teacher and student. In different teacher-student relationships, the expectation and conflict between art educators and their students are especially profound. While most will agree that art is about individuality, the insertion of the teacher-student dynamic into the relationship between ‘You’ and ‘I’ complicates it and results in subtle transformations to their artistic trajectories.
Lui Chun Kwong’s artworks serve as the backbone of You Are Here, I Am Not. The exhibition consists of works by more than 100 Hong Kong artists. All the participating artists are graduates of the Fine Arts Department at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where Lui taught for more than twenty years. Through this fellowship of past teacher-student relations and their collaboration as artists in the present, this exhibition will act as a platform to differentiate from their usual mode of thinking and working, and will also serve to examine the artistic practices of each artist in the exhibition.
Lui Chun Kwong (b. 1956) attended art courses under the Department of Extra-mural Studies at The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong before he studied in the Fine Arts Department of the National Taiwan Normal University. He joined the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1985 and further gained an MA degree from Goldsmiths College, under the University of London in 1994. He also founded The Hong Kong Modern Art Society of Watercolours with his fellow artists in 1988 and chaired the society for the first three years. Between 1998 and 2002, he served as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Visual Arts Society. His recent exhibitions include Legacy and Creations: Ink Art vs Ink Art at the Shanghai Art Museum (2010) and Beyond the Image: Liang Quan, Lui Chun Kwong, Yan Shan Chun at Osage Kwun Tong, Hong Kong (2009). He is currently an honorary museum advisor to the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

What is drawing? What is a drawing? Why do artists still make or think about drawing?
Beyond presenting drawings as a primary medium of expression, this exhibition explores artists’ multi-relationships with drawing as a muse, a thinking tool or a subject to be revisited in other art forms such as sculpture, animation, performance and installation.
Drawing Out Conversations was first presented at FOST Gallery, Singapore, in 2008, and then in Hong Kong in 2009 as Drawing Out Conversations: Hong Kong Leg. Now in Taipei, it continues to explore what contemporary drawing encompasses, and hopes to encourage dialogues among artists and audience. Thus, there will be artists’ talks and workshops during the exhibition period.

Shifting Topography
Chang Tsong-zung, 2010
In a city where real estate prices dominate all social discourse, and acquiring private space is the principal goal of every person reporting to work, there is a constant obsession about the potential value of every square inch, and fantasies about myriad possible uses. How this value system works, and how it gets fetishised, are central to understanding our economy. Exploring the possible uses of space, from the public to the secret and clandestine, opens an undercover entry into the cultural heart of Hong Kong. It is here where Hong Kong’s core value lies.
The mapping of the stock index, the pattern of street-grids encasing childhood memories, and the floor plans of malls tracing commodity-desire – all have become rooted in the Hong Kong imagination. They are blueprints for making sense of our world. Here the old science of geomancy has also been brought up to date for mapping positions of energy in simple offices, so as to plan positions of defense and channel paths of good will. We do not need to climb Lion Rock or ride on the Peak Tram to see how the spirit of the ‘feng-shui’ dragon is re-materializing in this city.
At home, our imagination is compartmentalized by boxed-in spaces. Almost invariably these are artificial ‘places’ without stories (histories), identifiable only as numbers; standardized ‘units’ removed from the ground. They need fiction to maintain their value: hence the embarrassing hyper-fictions of European highlife in Hong Kong real estate advertising. This helps to explain the strong urge among many Hong Kong artists to discover ‘true’ stories, to take back imaginative possession of their city. Some adopt the strategy of navigation by delineating tours and paths; some claim visual possession by fixing landmarks and making imaginary maps. There is no escape from the passion to escape from the monotony of repetitiveness and loss of memory to which we are being condemned by capitalist logic.
Artists in this exhibition have developed tactics and working methods that may be used to illuminate and transform the daily routine of urban life, but these represent only a small reserve of the countless ways to access the city. It is up to each one of us living here to discover for himself the hidden pattern of the matrix: the intrigues, the desires, the secret passages and links. By bringing a true imagination to bear, we can identify the wells of untapped energy and the possibilities for constructing a character from the materials of characterless structures, in order to build stories and topographs that will eventually become history, and a citizen’s topology of the city.

Gallery EXIT
Gallery EXIT presents Labium, a visual exploration in Bataillean obscenity featuring the works of HO Sin Tung (Hong Kong), HUANG Zheng (Beijing), MEI Zijia (Guangzhong), Ken-ichi MURATA (Japan), Angela SU (Hong Kong), and YAMAMOTO Takato (Japan).
Susan SONTAG wrote, "Bataille understood that what pornography is really about, ultimately, isn't sex but death…Only works dealing with that specific and sharpest inflection of the themes of lust, "the obscene", do. It's toward the gratifications of death, succeeding and surpassing those of eros, that every truly obscene quest tends."

From a Hakka fish village to an industrial estate, residential area, and nowadays a creative cluster, Fotan, a neglected district of Hong Kong, has been transformed drastically in the last century. Ten years ago, a few artists rented a flat in one of the industrial buildings in Fotan and use the space as their working studio. As word spread among friends, people from different creative disciplines start moving into the empty flats of buildings in the area. Soon after, the name Fotanian was introduced, following the first Open Studio event. With growing support from the government and commercial sectors throughout recent years, the annual Fotanian: Open Studio event gives life to the silent weekends of a remote industrial area and turn it into a vibrant, festive art celebration.
Fotanian: Open Studio 2010 is packed with excitement and enthusiasm. 224 artists from 59 studios are opening their doors giving visitors a glimpse behind the art scene and explore the cluster of lively studios and creative industries in Fotan. You are invited to a world of varied art form, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, mixed media, printmaking, installations, photography and video, etc. To foster the sharing and exchange of ideas, visitors are encouraged to engage in open dialogue with the artists in an approachable and friendly atmosphere.
The special exhibition , curated by Stella TANG Ying-chi , co-presented by Fotanian and Sino Group’s ‘Art in Hong Kong’, is going to transform one of the shoping Unit of Shatin Galleria into a delightful art venue. It features 8 distinguished artists in Hong Kong, exploring the question of dynamism and coexistence of powers. We are also glad to launch the Symposium & Screening Series in cooperation with Asia Art Archive this year. A convergence of sparkling speakers including scholars, curators, critics, government officials, gallery owners and artists create an intellectual platform to share thoughts and knowledge, and generate new ideas for future progression. The documentaries films shown in the screening session will address the theme of young artists in Hong Kong and how artists live with art throughout their life.
Whether you are familiar with Fotanian or this is your first encounter, prepare yourself for a completely new experience you have never seen before. We wish you a enjoyable time touring around the studios, discovering your favourite artwork and making many wonderful memories here.
Thank you for supporting Fotanian.
